SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 16

(By Senators Yost, Wells, Browning, Unger, Williams, Chafin and Klempa)

Urging the Governor of West Virginia to make an appropriation in the budget for the construction of a veterans cemetery to be located in the area of the state between Summersville and Bluefield.

Whereas, The West Virginia Veterans Coalition was established in 1996 to bring the Veterans Service Organizations together to present issues concerning the 170,000 veterans residing in the State of West Virginia to the Governor and the Legislature; and

Whereas, The West Virginia Veterans Coalition established a prioritized list of issues to be addressed and one of the priorities was the construction of a state veterans cemetery to be located in the area between Summersville and Bluefield; and

Whereas, There are currently only two veterans cemeteries in West Virginia, one National Cemetery located in Grafton and the Donald Kinnard State Veterans Cemetery located in Dunbar; and

Whereas, With a veterans population of over 170,000, there is a tremendous need for an additional veterans cemetery in West Virginia in the area between Summersville and Bluefield; and

Whereas, The National Cemetery in Grafton covers the northern part of our state and the Donald Kinnard Cemetery in Dunbar covers the central part of our state which leaves the southern most counties without a veterans cemetery; therefore, be it

    Resolved by the Senate:

That the Senate hereby urges the Governor of West Virginia to make an appropriation in the budget for the construction of a veterans cemetery to be located in the area of the state between Summersville and Bluefield; and, be it

Further Resolved, That the Clerk is hereby directed to forward a copy of this resolution to the Governor.
