Delegates Howell, Overington Receive Citizenship Awards From National Society Of The Sons Of The American Revolution

CHARLESTON, W.Va. – Delegates Gary Howell, R-Mineral, and John Overington, R-Berkeley, have been recognized by the National Society of the Sons of the American Revolution with the organization’s distinguished Silver Good Citizenship Medal.

Created by the society in 1939, the medal is the highest honor it can bestow on private citizens, recognizing outstanding and unusual patriotic achievement and service at the state level. It is presented to citizens of prominence in the areas of government, military, religion, education, business and other fields.

Members of the society presented Howell and Overington with their medals and certificates during a ceremony last week in the House of Delegates Chamber at the state Capitol in Charleston.

“It’s a tremendous honor to be receive this award from this esteemed organization,” Howell said. “I’m humbled by the recognition.”

“This society works to promote the ideals of good citizenship and respect for our American institutions,” Overington said. “I’m truly honored to accept this award.”

The Sons of the American Revolution is a historical, educational and patriotic nonprofit organization that seeks to promote the institutions of American freedom, an appreciation for true patriotism, respect for national symbols and the value of American citizenship in an effort to inspire succeeding generations to promote and defend those freedoms through public service.
