The following is a statement from Delegate Mike Caputo, D-Marion, House Minority Whip and United Mine Workers of America District 31 international vice president, regarding Century Aluminum’s announcement it is not going to reopen the Ravenswood plant:
“This is yet another terrible blow to those hard-working employees who dearly want to return to the jobs they’ve fought so long for. But I am also deeply concerned for the 700-plus Century retirees, who have been without the benefits owed to them for several years. I find Century Aluminum’s treatment of its retirees reprehensible, and the recent statements from some politicians that it’s time to ‘move on’ entirely unacceptable. They are quick to help anyone on Wall Street but not so quick to help those on Main Street. We must do all we can to see that these retirees are fairly compensated, and the promise of health care is upheld. We must also never stop working to bring those jobs back to our state.”
