Mineral County Delegate Working to Preserve History

Charleston, WV - Delegate Gary Howell (R - Mineral) is working with the Mineral County Commission and the Mineral County Parks and Recreation to save the cabin at the site of the birthplace of Nancy Hanks, the mother of Abraham Lincoln.

The cabin is slated to be torn down following the termination of an agreement between the Nancy Hanks Farm Association and the Mineral County Historical Society on maintenance and liability of the property.

“As Americans and especially West Virginians, it is vitally important that we protect and preserve the fabrics that makes up the quilt which envelops our rich history,“ said Delegate Howell. “Abraham Lincoln saved the Union and created our wonderful state in Almost Heaven, the least we can do is save his mother’s home place.”

Delegate Howell has spoken to the County Commission about moving the cabin to Larenim Park in nearby Burlington, WV and to have the ownership of the structure transferred from the homeowners association.

“Moving the cabin a to Larenim Park would not only allow the structure to be preserved it would also give citizens better access to this one of a kind, historical and important piece of history,” said Howell.
