CHARLESTON – As the session reaches into the final two-week stretch, Delegate Adam Young said he is very pleased that two of bills he sponsors that support West Virginia workers have passed the House and are receiving positive attention.
“My top priority is helping West Virginia workers support themselves and their families,” Young said. “I am gratified that both bills easily passed the House.”
Young is a cosponsor of House Bill 4283, which will raise the minimum wage. If the Legislature passes the bill, the minimum wage will rise to $8.00 per hour after January 1, 2015, and to $8.75 per hour and after January 1, 2016.
A recent Washington Post- ABC News poll that showed that about two in three Americans say the federal minimum wage floor should be lifted and a majority believe lawmakers should pursue policies aimed at balancing an economic system they think is unfair.
“People at both the federal and state levels want government to increase hourly base pay,” Young. “It is the least we can do for both our young workers and our seniors, many of whom are forced to supplement their retirement with minimum-wage jobs.”
Economic projections show the economy will improve at a rate that will allow businesses to absorb the gradual increase with out any negative effects, he noted.
“And if we give workers more income, they will spend more money within their local economies,” Young said.
The delegate also cosponsored House Bill 4824, the Pregnant Workers’ Fairness Act, passed the House unanimously.
“So many women work throughout their pregnancies, often because they cannot afford unpaid leave,” Young said. “We want to ensure that pregnant women are given reasonable accommodations in the workplace so they can continue to support their families.”
Both bills are pending in the Senate.
