Delegate Capito Asks Amazon CEO To Consider West Virginia For New Headquarters

CHARLESTON, W.Va. – Delegate Moore Capito, R-Kanawha, today sent a letter to Amazon.com, Inc. CEO Jeff Bezos asking him to consider West Virginia as a possible location for the company’s new corporate headquarters.

Seattle-based Amazon recently announced plans to invest $5 billion to build a second North American headquarters, dubbed “Amazon HQ2,” which could potentially create up to 50,000 jobs.

The company has said it is looking for a place with “a stable and business-friendly environment,” and “communities that think big and creatively when considering locations and real estate options.”

Delegate Capito said West Virginia could be an ideal fit for Amazon’s vision, because the company could not only build a headquarters, but a surrounding community from the ground up.

“West Virginia presents a level of autonomy no other state can,” he said in the letter. “Your company requires a facility, but here you can build a community that houses a facility. We have the best and hardest working people in the country. With an abundance of land, energy, and natural beauty, Amazon’s HQ2 can meet and exceed its business needs, while invigorating the hope of a people and chartering a path to the future for an entire state.”

While business analysts say large cities like Boston or Atlanta seem to fit Amazon’s search criteria, Delegate Capito said West Virginia shouldn’t count itself out. He said for the state to grow, it needs to seek out opportunities and market itself in new and creative ways.

“For us to win, we have to compete,” Delegate Capito said. “We have to think big and without limitations when we think about our future.”

He said that even if Amazon does not eventually consider the state, by putting West Virginia out there as a contender, it could inspire other companies to think about the state as a possibility for future investment.

“I made a commitment to my constituents to make every effort to bring jobs to West Virginia, and that is what I am trying to do,” Delegate Capito said. “West Virginians are hard-working, dedicated people and any company would be well-served by expanding in our state.”
