Speaker Armstead Statement on 2016 Legislative Elections

CHARLESTON, W.Va. – House Speaker Tim Armstead, R-Kanawha, today issued the following statement in response to Tuesday’s election results, in which Republicans maintained a 63-37 margin in the House of Delegates.

“Voters sent a clear message in legislative races last night that the bold, conservative changes we have delivered over the past two years represent the best path forward for West Virginia,” Speaker Armstead said.

“I look forward to working with our new and returning members, as well as the new leadership team in the Senate to advance a 2017 legislative agenda that will continue to move our state forward,” Speaker Armstead said. “I’ve also reached out today to Governor-elect Justice to let him know that, while we may be of different political parties, we are willing to work together and find common ground on how to best help the people of West Virginia.

“We have a lot of challenges on the horizon but each presents an opportunity to improve the lives of our citizens,” Speaker Armstead said. “We must deal with our continuing budget deficit and make our education system one that allows our teachers more freedom to teach our students without excessive red tape. We need to take bold steps to create more good-paying jobs to keep our young people here at home. Republicans have the vision and courage to take these bold steps to turn our state around, and we will work each and every day to make these goals a reality.”
