Kessler Praises Creation of Scholarships For Children of Slain Officers

CHARLESTON, W.V. – Senate President Jeff Kessler (D-Marshall) applauded today the creation of a new law that will help provide a future for the children of law enforcement officers who die in the line of duty.

President Kessler sponsored Senate Bill 394. It creates scholarship for dependent children of law enforcement officers who die in the performance of their duty. The law provides scholarships up to $7,500 for surviving children to attend in-state colleges and universities

“West Virginia’s men and women who wear the uniform risk their lives to protect and serve,” says Kessler. “This law will ensure that if a law enforcement officer should lay down their life that their children will be taken care of. I applaud the Governor for signing this legislation.”

The bill had bipartisan support in the Senate, with the remaining 33 Senators signing on as co-sponsors. It was one of several bills this past legislative session that focused on law enforcement. The scholarship program goes into effect July 1, 2013.
