CHARLESTON, W.Va. – The West Virginia House of Delegates today voted to create a new legislative committee to target the state’s substance abuse epidemic.
On the first day of the 60-day legislative session, delegates adopted House Resolution 3, creating the Select Committee on Prevention and Treatment of Substance Abuse.
“The substance abuse epidemic has been a scourge on our state,” said House Speaker Tim Armstead, R-Kanawha. “It has hurt many of our families and communities and cost the lives of far too many West Virginians. This new committee will spend the next 60 days focused on ways we can turn the tide against substance abuse and improve and implement prevention and treatment programs.”
Speaker Armstead appointed the following members to serve on the 11-person committee, which will be authorized to hear testimony, consider legislation and recommend actions to the Speaker:
• Delegate Joe Ellington, R-Mercer, who will serve as chairman • Delegate Chris Stansbury, R-Kanawha, who will serve as vice-chairman • Delegate Kelli Sobonya, R-Cabell • Delegate Cindy Frich, R-Monongalia • Delegate Roger Hanshaw, R-Clay • Delegate Erikka Storch, R-Ohio • Delegate Jill Upson, R-Jefferson • Delegate Mick Bates, D-Raleigh • Delegate Steven Shaffer, D-Preston • Delegate Brent Boggs, D-Braxton • Delegate Don Perdue, D-Wayne
