Martinsburg, WV - September 11, 2013 - Senate Majority Leader John Unger(D - Berkeley) commended Paul Mattox, Secretary of the State Department of Transportation for the completion of the Raleigh Street extension at its official opening and ribbon cutting today in Martinsburg.
“Secretary Mattox has worked well with Martinsburg on this project, and with the commitment Martinsburg city officials made to the project, he was able to see it through to its completion. I commend him for his attention to and diligence in finishing this project,” said Senator Unger.
The lack of another viable route for safety and emergency vehicles when North Queen Street gets congested had been a concern in Martinsburg for years. Then, in 2005, Senator Unger arranged a meeting between, then-Commissioner Mattox and Martinsburg city officials.
"This was an issue for the city even when I was a kid, and here was an opportunity to get it fixed," said Senator Unger, “Through that meeting, I was able to assist in getting this project in motion. I was also able to obtain $8 million for the project, and now it is complete.”
The completed 1.2-mile extension of Raleigh Street runs from West Race Street to Edwin Miller Boulevard.
