House Finance Chair Eric Nelson and Delegate Mike Pushkin Announce West Side Bridge Repair Project

Charleston, W.Va. - House Finance Chairman Eric Nelson (R-Kanawha) and Delegate Mike Pushkin (D-Kanawha) announced today that repairs to the U.S. 60 Washington Street bridge expansion dam will begin soon.

Chairman Nelson said, “Delegate Pushkin and I have been notified by Secretary of Transportation Thomas Smith that engineering plans and cost estimates have been completed for the Washington Street bridge repair project. This is the first step in effecting a permanent repair which has been estimated to cost approximately $500,000 and is welcome news for area residents.”

Delegate Pushkin said “the project is expected to take approximately four months with as much of the work as possible being done at night so as to cause the least amount of disruptions. As a cab driver who travels this road daily I can tell you this repair cannot come too soon.”

The bridge issue was caused by the failure of an abutment back wall which has allowed the tooth dam of the expansion joint to rotate upward. A temporary asphalt patch has been placed over the tooth dam or order to prevent damage to tires.

“On behalf of Delegate Pushkin and myself I wanted to thank Secretary Smith for this welcome news and look forward to the completion of this project” said Chairman Nelson. “We both have been in frequent contact with the Secretary and his office and we’re gratified to know that this issue is being addressed.”

Delegate Pushkin added, "I appreciate the opportunity to work with Chairman Nelson on this vital project for our community.”
