Urging the Public Service Commission to reconsider its recent
decision regarding adding a second area code for telephone
users in certain areas of the state.
Whereas, All telephones in West Virginia have had the same 304
area code since the final North American Numbering Plan was
approved in 1947; and
Whereas,
The plan recently approved by the Public Service Commission splits the state geographically and those telephone
users in central and southern West Virginia will retain the 304
area code while those in the north central counties, as well as the
eastern and northern panhandles, will be assigned a new area code;
and
Whereas,
The decision to assign a new area code in the north
central counties and the eastern and northern panhandles will have
a negative financial impact on individuals, businesses, and
institutions in these areas; and
Whereas, By assigning the new area code in an overlay approach
rather than a geographic plan, the burden on residents would be
lessened and the costs to businesses and institutions would be
decreased; therefore, be it
Resolved by the Legislature of West Virginia:
That the Public Service Commission is urged to reconsider its
recent decision regarding adding a second area code for telephone
users in certain areas of the state.
