HOUSE CONCURRENT RESOLUTION NO. 88

(By Delegates Stephens, C. Miller, Sobonya, Morgan,

                    Craig and Reynolds)

 

 

Requesting the Division of Highways to name the Merritt Creek Bridge on WV Route 10 in Cabell County, bridge number 06-10-4.99, the “1st Lt. Therrel Shane Childers Memorial Bridge”.

    Whereas, 1st Lt. Therrel Shane Childers was born on June 19, 1972 to Joseph and Judy Childers in West Hamlin, Lincoln County; and

    Whereas, 1st Lt. Therrel Shane Childers enlisted in the United States Marine Corp shortly after graduating from high school in 1990 in Harrison, Mississippi; and

    Whereas, 1st Lt. Therrel Shane Childers served in the 1991 Persian Gulf War; and

    Whereas, 1st Lt. Therrel Shane Childers graduated from the Citadel in 2001 while on active duty; and

    Whereas, 1st Lt. Therrel Shane Childers was deployed to the Middle East for a second time in February, 2003, as a Second Lieutenant assigned to the 1st Battalion, 5th Marine Regiment, 1st Marine Division; and

    Whereas, 1st Lt. Therrel Shane Childers was killed in action as a result of being shot in the stomach while leading his platoon in securing an oil facility in southern Iraq; and

    Whereas, 1st Lt. Therrel Shane Childers was the first American soldier killed in Operation Iraqi Freedom; and

    Whereas, 1st Lt. Therrel Shane Childers was posthumously promoted to the rank of First Lieutenant by the Marine Corps Commandant; and

    Whereas, It is fitting and proper that 1st Lt. Therrel Shane Childers be remembered and acknowledged for his courageous action and ultimate sacrifice; therefore, be it

    Resolved by the Legislature of West Virginia:

    That the Legislature hereby requests the Division of Highways to name the Merritt Creek Bridge on WV Route 10 in Cabell County, bridge number 06-10-4.99, the “1st Lt. Therrel Shane Childers Memorial Bridge”; and, be it

    Further Resolved, That the Division of Highways is hereby requested to have made and be placed signs identifying the bridge as the “1st Lt. Therrel Shane Childers Memorial Bridge”; and, be it

    Further Resolved, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates forward a certified copy of this resolution to the Secretary of the Department of Transportation and to the surviving family of 1st Lt. Childers.
