[Originating in the Committee on Education]

(March 2, 2010)

Requesting the Joint Committee on Government and Finance to conduct a study on the need for setting standards for assignment of school athletic directors.

Whereas, There is a need for individuals to be responsible for supervising the management and operation of the athletic programs and activities in schools; and
Whereas,
County boards of education and schools fulfill this need in a variety of methods and with a variety of school employees, coaches or other individuals ; and
Whereas, Athletic budgets are often one of the largest financial accounts in schools, and managing an athletic budget demands great responsibility; and
Whereas,
School administrators ultimately are responsible for ensuring that provision is made for all the aspects of athletic team operations ; and
Whereas, It is becoming increasingly more difficult for coaches and school administrators to fulfill these responsibilities in addition to their job requirements; and
Whereas, These responsibilities require a significant time commitment and it is becoming more difficult to retain the individuals assigned to these duties; and
Whereas, Some county boards and schools assign to athletic directors the duties and responsibilities of planning, management, operation and evaluation of the total athletic program; therefore, be it
Resolved by the Legislature of West Virginia:
That the Joint Committee on Government and Finance is hereby requested to study the need for setting standards for assignment of school athletic directors; and, be it
