Requesting the Division of Highways name Bridge Number: 25-079/00-135.62 () (25A260), (39.46437, -80.13663) locally known as PLEASANT VALLEY BRIDGE, carrying IS 079 over Mar. Co. Rt. 64 in Marion County, the "Janice L. Cosco Memorial Bridge" with accompanying signage stating, "Marion County's Longest Serving Clerk."
Whereas, Janice L. Cosco lived a life worthy of remembrance; and
Whereas, Janice grew up in Dakota, WV and graduated from Rivesville High School; and
Whereas, After high school, Janice worked for Westinghouse Electric Corporation and the Fairmont Travel Agency; and
Whereas, Janice began what would become a long and storied career in politics by becoming involved in the Young Democrats and Democratic Women's organizations, heading the "Jim Sprouse for Governor" campaign in Marion County, and helping lead a statewide campaign to elect Jimmy Carter for President; and
Whereas, Janice would seize the opportunity and pursue the office of Marion County Clerk, winning the election before taking office in 1981; and
Whereas, Janice would continue being a public servant in the same office, winning elections for 39 years, before retiring in 2020 having earned the title of "Longest Serving Marion County Clerk"; and
Whereas, In addition to her duties as Clerk, Janice also served as President of the Marion County Democratic Women, was the Chairperson of the Marion County Democratic Executive Committee in the 1990's, and, among others, organized the most successful Young Democrats in Marion County; and
Whereas, Janice continued this life of service by serving as the Secretary of the National Association of Counties and was the National Representative for Election Reform in the late 1990's and early 2000's; and
Whereas, Janice held several positions on various state boards, including the West Virginia Courthouse Facilities Board, held several offices in the West Virginia Association of Counties and lobbied on their behalf until a full-time lobbyist was hired, and helped secure many grants for Marion County; therefore, be it
Resolved by the Legislature of West Virginia:
That the Division of Highways name Bridge Number: 25-079/00-135.62 () (25A260), (39.46437, -80.13663) locally known as PLEASANT VALLEY BRIDGE, carrying IS 079 over Mar. Co. Rt. 64 in Marion County, the "Janice L. Cosco Memorial Bridge," and, be it
Further Resolved, That the Division of Highways is hereby requested to have made and be placed signs identifying the bridge as the "Janice L. Cosco Memorial Bridge," and a second set of signage accompanying the first that reads "Marion County's Longest Serving Clerk"; and, be it
Further Resolved, That the Clerk of the House forward a copy of this resolution to the Commissioner of the Division of Highways.
