HOUSE CONCURRENT RESOLUTION NO. 46

(By Delegates Eldridge, Stowers, Rodighiero and Butcher)




Requesting the Division of Highways to name the bridge near Stollings in Logan County on State Route 17 , bridge number 23- 17-0.30, as the "Staff Sergeant Robert Lee Chambers Memorial Bridge".

Whereas, Staff Sergeant Robert Lee Chambers
was born on May 5, 1941, in Fort Branch, a son of Leonard Jack Chambers and Beatrice Chambers; and
Whereas, Staff Sergeant Chambers
grew up in Logan County and attended Logan County High School; and
Whereas, Staff Sergeant Chambers
was in the U.S. Army, successfully served four tours of duty in Vietnam, was a helicopter gunner and was missing in action for three months; and
Whereas,
Staff Sergeant Chambers was wounded while serving in Vietnam and lost a leg as a result of those wounds; and
Whereas, Staff Sergeant Chambers
was awarded the Vietnam Service Medal with nine Campaign Stars, the Army Service Ribbon, the Vietnam Campaign Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, the Purple Heart, the Combat Infantry Badge, the Army Commendation Medal, four Overseas Service Bars, the Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal, the Vietnam Cross of Gallantry, the Bronze Star, six Awards for the Good Conduct Medal and the Overseas Service Ribbon; and
Whereas,
Staff Sergeant Chambers was honorably discharged from the U. S. Army after twenty-three years of exemplary service and returned to live in Stollings until his death on December 7, 2009 ; and
Whereas, It is fitting to honor Staff Sergeant Chambers
for his service to his community, his state and his country by naming the bridge near Stollings in Logan County on Route 17 , bridge number 23-17-0.30 , as the "Staff Sergeant Robert Lee Chambers Memorial Bridge" ; therefore, be it
Resolved by the West Virginia Legislature:
That the Legislature hereby requests the Division of Highways to name the bridge
near Stollings in Logan County on Route 17 , bridge number 23-17-0.30 , as the "Staff Sergeant Robert Lee Chambers Memorial Bridge" ; and, be it
Further Resolved, That the Division of Highways is hereby requested to have made and be placed signs identifying the bridge as the "
Staff Sergeant Robert Lee Chambers Memorial Bridge "; and, be it
Further Resolved, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates forward a certified copy of this resolution to the Secretary of the Department of Transportation and to Staff Sergeant Robert Lee Chambers
' wife, Lora Linville Chambers; son, Roger Lee Chambers, Jr.; daughters Sheila Lester, Robbie Brewster and Darlene Carroll; and surviving brothers and sisters, Jimmy Chambers, John Chambers, Larry Chambers, Stella Hightower, Delores Vance and Ruth Shanklin.
