HOUSE CONCURRENT RESOLUTION NO. 18
(By Delegates Longstreth, Caputo, Manchin)
Requesting the bridge on Homewood Avenue in Fairmont, specifically
bridge number 25-31/9-0.05, be named the "Sgt. Richard W.
Griffith Memorial Bridge."
Whereas, Richard Wayne Griffith was born November 14, 1947 in
Fairmont, West Virginia; and
Whereas, He attended and graduated from East Fairmont High
School in 1965; and
Whereas, After graduating, he enlisted in the Army Medical
Corps; and
Whereas, After enlisting, he was deployed to Vietnam on August
15, 1966 and was assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 14th Infantry, 25th
Infantry Division in the Binh Doung Province, South Vietnam; and
Whereas, While serving courageously in Vietnam he was killed in
action on July 2, 1967; and
Whereas, After his death he was awarded the Combat Medics Badge,
Bronze Start with 3 V's, Purple Heart, National Defense, Vietnam
Campaign and Vietnam Service Medals; therefore, be it
Resolved by the Legislature of West Virginia:
That the Division of Highways is hereby requested to name bridge
number 25-31/9-0.05 on Homewood Avenue in Fairmont, West Virginia the "Sgt. Richard W. Griffith Memorial Bridge"; and, be it
Further Resolved, That the Commissioner of the Division of
Highways is hereby requested to cause to be fabricated signs to be
erected at each entryway of the bridge, containing bold and
prominent letters proclaiming the bridge to be named the "Sgt.
Richard W. Griffith Memorial Bridge"; and, be it
Further Resolved, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates
forward a certified copy of this resolution to the Commissioner of
the Division of Highways and the surviving family of Richard Wayne
Griffith
