HOUSE CONCURRENT RESOLUTION 15

Requesting the Division of Highways name Bridge Number: 41-077/00-028.93  (NB) (41A210), (37.61525, -81.11937) locally known as I-77 NB OVER RAL 48, carrying IS 077 over CR 48 in Raleigh County, the "USMC PFC Delbert Carles Roles Memorial Bridge."

Whereas, Delbert Carles Roles lived a life worthy of remembrance; and

Whereas, Delbert was born on November 17th, 1921, in Odd, WV; and

Whereas, Delbert enlisted the United States Marines on February 6th, 1942, and, two years later, as a member of Company L, 3rd Battalion, 9th Marines, 3rd Marine Division, Delbert found himself aboard the LST #269 sailing to Guam; and

Whereas, Once in Guam, PFC Roles fought in the Second Battle of Guam in a fight that lasted from July 21st to August 10th, 1944, and featured some of the fiercest confrontations of World War 2; and

Whereas, After surviving the initial landing, which included fierce fighting and the loss of many lives, PFC Roles continued honoring his fellow Marines with vigilant service until he was killed in action on July 29th, 1944; and

Whereas, PFC Delbert Carles Roles received a Purple Heart, Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal, World War II Victory Medal, and Combat Action Ribbon; and

Whereas, PFC Delbert C. Roles was buried in AN&M Cemetery #1, Grave #5, Row #13 at Asan Point, U.S. Territory of Guam; and

Whereas, Five years later, on January 26th, 1949, PFC Roles’ father requested that PFC Roles be reburied in the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific and he was laid to rest in Section C, Site 1271 in Honolulu, Hawaii where he remains today; therefore, be it

Resolved by the Legislature of West Virginia:

That the Division of Highways name Bridge Number: 41-077/00-043.59  (SB) (41A229), (37.78047, -81.22121) locally known as I-77 OVER CABELL RD, carrying IS 077 over WHITESTICK CRK/CABELL RD in Raleigh County, the "USMC PFC Delbert Carles Roles Memorial Bridge" and, be it

Further Resolved, That the Division of Highways is hereby requested to have made and be placed signs identifying the bridge as the "USMC PFC Delbert Carles Roles Memorial Bridge," and, be it

Further Resolved, That the Clerk of the House forward a copy of this resolution to the Commissioner of the Division of Highways.
