Office of the Senate Majority Leader

John Unger

Welcome from Senate Majority Leader John Unger II

I was appointed Senate Majority Leader on January 12, 2011. I am responsible for the day-to-day management of the Senate’s floor sessions and serve as the chief policy strategist for the Senate President, while working with other senators to direct legislation into enactment.

During my tenure, I served as Chairman of the Senate Transportation and Infrastructure Committee for six years where I was instrumental in opening Route 9, obtaining funding for the Raleigh Street extension and initiating the project to provide safety barriers on Interstate 81. In addition, I sponsored the creation of the State Division of Energy, anti-animal cruelty, and numerous education bills.

Along with my legislative duties, I am pursuing a Masters of Divinity at Wesley Theological Seminary in Washington D. C. and serve as Vicar/Pastor of St. John Lutheran Church in Harpers Ferry.

As Majority Leader, I am honored and look forward to working with the Senate President, all other members of the Senate, the Governor and members of the House of Delegates to promote unified and productive legislative sessions for the people of West Virginia.
