Senate Select Committee on Children and Poverty

Child Poverty is an epidemic, with profound direct and indirect impacts, which we cannot afford to ignore. It is a persistent and growing problem. In West Virginia, a full 25% of all children currently live below the federal poverty line. Another 26% live just above it. It is a humanitarian crisis, to be sure, when such a large number of children, our most vulnerable citizens, live without the most basic necessities. But the impact of child poverty goes far beyond immediate deprivation. For the children who face it, child poverty undermines future possibilities. And because it is so highly correlated with adult unemployment, crime, and addiction, it imposes enormous long-term social costs on all of us.

In 2013, the West Virginia Senate created the Select Committee on Children and Poverty to focus on the problem of child poverty, and begin the process of formulating state policy to address it. The Select Committee has begun by conducting meetings and gathering information. Some of that information is reflected in this website.

We encourage you to help us tackle the problem of child poverty. We invite you to make use of the resources you will find here. We welcome your input on policy alternatives.
