Mon. County Readaloud Celebrates 20 Years: West Virginia Children's Author Marc Harshman to Speak

Mon-County Read Aloud will celebrate its 20th Anniversary on Monday, August 13 at Wesley United Methodist Church. The 6:30 pm event, which is free and open to the public will feature Marc Harshman, children’s author and recently named West Virginia Poet Laureate. Mr. Harshman will talk about his love of reading, how he got his ideas for his books, and how he became inspired to become an author.

Mon-County Read Aloud organizes local volunteers to read to students in county elementary school classrooms. The group also funds 13 book clubs in middle and high schools. Mon. County Read Aloud raises its funds through an annual spring book sale which The Dominion Post co-sponsors.

According to Barbara Evans Fleischauer, Chair of the local Read Aloud organization, “what we do continues to be vital because almost 75% of West Virginia 4th graders are not proficient in reading”. “We are trying to encourage a love of reading with an understanding that reading is critical to future success”, she said.

Mon. County Read Aloud has purchased 100 copies of Harshman’s books and will distribute them at the event on an age appropriate, first come, first service basis. Books will also be available for purchase. There will be free parking in nearby city lots.

“I have spoken at Read Aloud programs throughout West Virginia”, said Harshman, “and have come to know first hand the amazing gift this program represents for children, as it promotes successful reading both at home and in school. That so many people have volunteered to give of their valuable time for over 20 years in Mon County is quite remarkable, and I salute them and their fine organization”.
