Speaker Miley ;

Speaker, House Members Attending Business Incentive Conference

To learn more from entrepreneurs, leading academics and policymakers from around the country about how to better support small business innovation, House Speaker Tim Miley and two members of the House Small Business, Entrepreneurship & Economic Development Committee are traveling to Kansas City to attend the Kauffman Foundation’s Incentives to Innovate Conference.

“As our House committee continues to travel throughout West Virginia to gain insight into how to foster small business growth and encourage entrepreneurship, we also are looking for success stories from other states that could be replicated at home,” Speaker Miley said. “This conference provides the perfect forum for that.”

Also attending the day-long conference, which takes place Thursday, April 17, are Small Business, Entrepreneurship & Economic Development Chairman Doug Skaff and committee member and House Finance Vice Chairman Doug Reynolds.

“This is a golden opportunity for us to hear directly from other state lawmakers and business owners about how to help get startups off the ground and move small businesses forward,” Skaff, D-Kanawha, said. “I look forward to coming back and figuring out how we can apply what we’ve learned to West Virginia policy.”

Reynolds, D-Cabell, noted that another focus of the conference is research on how to best gauge the effectiveness of policies intended to foster innovation and small business growth.

“Not only do we want to provide incentives for entrepreneurs and small business innovators, we want to continually monitor the progress of those incentives,” Reynolds said. “Just as businesses must change in order to adapt to our evolving economy, state laws, regulations and policies should too.”

Speaker Miley said he is also looking forward to two “lightening” round discussions that will include all conference attendees.

“This promises to be an inspiring exchange of ideas,” he said.
