Senator Billy Wayne Bailey Proposes Four-Day Workweek to Save on Gas

Senator Billy Wayne Bailey (D-Wyoming), in yet another effort to fight for the working class of West Virginia, challenged the Governor to allow state employees to work four 10-hour workdays so that they may save money on looming gas prices.

“State employees are shelling out twice as much money for gas as they did last year,” Bailey said. “Allowing employees to save 20 percent in gasoline expenditures can make a significant difference for families who are on a tight budget. We in state government must let West Virginians know we care about and understand their sacrifices.”

Senator Bailey sent a request to the Governor April 12 explaining his proposal. Bailey wants Governor Manchin to issue an executive order to put his proposal in effect.

Bailey said successful implementation of the policy could not only allow employees to have more cash in their pockets, it could also allow state offices to keep their doors open later into the evening and it could substantially reduce the burden of overcrowded highways.

Bailey’s proposal would create a system that would allow employees to work staggered days so that offices could remain open each day of the week. In essence, some employees would have Monday off, and others Friday.

“The benefits are clearly widespread,” Bailey said. “If we keep office doors open from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday, citizens who normally take vacation time to conduct business can now complete their tasks without even having to forfeit precious vacation days. And having fewer people on the highways can potentially reduce commute time and accidents.

“Employees get an extra day off, and they save money,” Bailey said. “What could be better?”
