CHARLESTON, W.V. – Senate President Jeff Kessler (D-Marshall) announced today that he is deeply disappointed with the recent ruling from a federal bankruptcy judge allowing Patriot Coal to back out of its collective bargaining agreement with the United Mine Workers of America.
Wednesday’s ruling allows Patriot Coal to make changes to benefits for both working and retired miners under existing contracts.
“This ruling will have a devastating effect on thousands of hard working West Virginians,” says Kessler. “I am saddened to see how these men and women are being treated after giving so much of their lives to the company.”
Senate President Kessler says he is hopeful the ruling will be overturned on appeal.
