Feed to Achieve Act Headed to Governor

Charleston, WV - West Virginia Senate Majority Leader John Unger, (D-Berkeley), announced the passage by the Legislature of the West Virginia Feed to Achieve Act.

"The Feed to Achieve Act is an important step forward to ensure that all students have their stomachs filled, so that the teachers can effectively fill their minds," said Senator Unger.

The legislation brings together the State Board of Education, State Department of Agriculture and State Department of Health and Human Resources in order to increase student participation in nutritious, lunch and breakfast programs. The bill will also maximize the access to available federal funds, while providing a way for individuals, communities and businesses to contribute funds which would be used exclusively to purchase food for children.

"Working with the House of Delegates, I believe we have sent Governor Tomblin a great piece of legislation," said Senator Unger, “No child should go hungry. This bill gives the tools to communities, so that no child in West Virginia goes hungry.”

To complement the Feed to Achieve Act, the Legislature hosted a screening of the new documentary film “A Place at the Table,” which screening was organized by the Senate Select Committee on Children and Poverty.

“After watching the film, I felt it was important that the committee members, as well as the entire Legislature, have the opportunity to see the film,” said Unger, Chairman of the Senate Select Committee on Children and Poverty, “The film frames the issue perfectly and describes in vivid detail the same struggles described during our community meetings.”
