Senator Sam Cann

Cann Sworn-In As State Senator

Charleston, W.Va.– Newly appointed State Senator Sam Cann (D-Harrison) was sworn in Thursday morning filling the vacancy left behind by the resignation of Joseph Minard who has now filled the position of Senate Clerk. Cann’s wife, Phyllis, along with his mother-in-law, Violet Mazza, daughter, Laura Cann, and three brothers, Jim, Carmine, Jr., and Larry Cann were all present at the ceremony. Cann’s father and former Delegate, Carmine J. Cann, was also present via video chat.

“It is a real honor to have been appointed by Governor Earl Ray Tomblin to fill the vacancy in the Senate created by the retirement of a long time central West Virginia leader and friend, Joe Minard,” says Cann, “Joe has been a pillar of stability in terms of leadership in our senatorial district as well as a close friend and mentor of mine and it is my goal to maintain the same high standards that he has demonstrated.”

Cann will be serving as Vice Chairman of the Economic Development Committee and will serve as a member on the Pensions, Government Organizations, Agriculture and Judiciary committees.

Cann received his bachelor’s and master’s degrees from West Virginia University and is the former president of the Independent Oil and Gas Association.

“I look forward to working with the folks from around the district to make our area of the state the best that it can be,” says Cann.

Cann was appointed on January 16th by Governor Earl Ray Tomblin to serve for the four-year term. Previously, Cann served in the House of Delegates representing Harrison County and was first elected in 1994.
