House Leaders Commend Kanawha Delegation for Redistricting Work

CHARLESTON – The members of the Kanawha County 30th District delegation should be applauded for working together to develop a new district plan that each member of that group agrees best serves county residents, House leaders said today.

Majority Leader Brent Boggs and Majority Whip Mike Caputo, the Chair and Vice Chair of the House Select Committee on Redistricting, congratulate Delegates Bonnie Brown, Nancy Guthrie, Bobby Hatfield, Mark Hunt, Eric Nelson, Doug Skaff and Danny Wells.

“Redistricting is a very complicated process and I think each member of the Kanawha 30th District delegation handled it very well,” Chairman Boggs said. “The result is two districts that make sense for the residents in those communities.”

Boggs said he is grateful that all the members came to the table.

“The fact that all the delegates forged this agreement speaks volumes about how well they are able to team together to represent their constituents,” Boggs said. “They should be commended.”

Majority Whip Caputo said the leadership also appreciated the other House members’ willingness to allow the members from the 30th some extra time to work out exactly how to approach such a significant change.

“It is certainly worth noting that the only real issue that was in dispute among the members of the 30th was how best to serve their constituents,” Caputo said. “That’s what this special session is all about.”

The Majority Leader added that he is extremely proud of the entire House redistricting plan, which includes the addition of 11 single-member districts, going from 36 of 58 districts (62 percent) to 47 of 66 districts (71 percent).

“This process was about serving the individual, unique needs of each community in this diverse state – figuring out what’s the best fit for each district, not what any political or special interest group says is best across-the-board,” Boggs said. “We would like to commend the committee members and the staff for all their work on this. It was an extremely complex plan to put together.”
