Michael Oliverio II

Senator's Bill to Change West Virginia Energy Portfolio

In the wake of a United States pull for “green” energy, Senator Michael Oliverio II (D - Monongalia) has a plan for West Virginia.

His plan begins with the passing of Senate Bill 350, a bill promoting the simple way of encouraging West Virginians to actively use recycled energy.

“The bill will strengthen the Alternative and Renewable Portfolio Standard by encouraging more clean power in our state,” Oliverio said. “It will increase productivity, efficiency, and competitiveness in the state.”

The bill moves the concept of recycled energy from the definition of “Alternative Energy Resources” to the definition of “Renewable Energy Resources.” This makes recycled energy eligible to receive two credits per megawatt hour generated rather than one.

“Recyclable energy is, without a doubt, a renewable energy resource,” Oliverio said. “The Senate has realized this and passed the legislation. I hope the house will do the same.”

The bill is currently waiting to be taken up by the House Committee on Energy, Industry, Labor, Economic Development and Small Business. If passed through the committee, it will be read on the House floor.

“Senate Bill 350 will encourage substantial investments in West Virginia. It shows that West Virginia is taking a step forward in energy and innovation, and is ready for whatever comes our way.”

Senate Bill 350 passed the Senate on Feb. 11.
