Mitch Carmichael

Senator Ryan Weld Named Majority Whip

CHARLESTON – Senate President Mitch Carmichael, R-Jackson, has named Senator Ryan Weld, R-Brooke, Majority Whip for the West Virginia Senate. He replaces Senator Craig Blair, R-Berkeley, who recently was named Chairman of the Senate Finance Committee.

Senator Weld, who was elected to the Senate in 2016, currently serves as Chairman of the Military Committee and Vice Chairman of the Judiciary and Workforce committees. He also serves as a member the Government Organization, Health and Human Resources, and Pensions committees. He will continue to serve in his committee leadership roles while assuming this new role as Majority Whip.

Senator Weld was first elected to the Legislature in 2014 as a member of the House of Delegates. In his first term as a Senator, he dedicated a significant portion of his time to tackling West Virginia’s crippling drug epidemic, a problem he sees firsthand in his work as an assistant prosecutor in Brooke County.

“Though he is one of our newest members, Senator Weld has already established himself as a tireless champion of both our strong, conservative agenda in the Senate, and as a true warrior for his district,” Senate President Carmichael said. “He will make a tremendous addition to our leadership team, and I am counting on his skill, his talent, and his ability to work with all Senators as we head into the next session. This is a position that we rely upon heavily in leadership, especially when it comes to making sure we have our Senators all on the same page for critical legislation, and I can think of no better person to be our advocate than Senator Weld.”

Senator Weld will begin his duties immediately.

“I am honored that Senate President Carmichael has chosen me for this position,” Senator Weld said. “I am committed every day to working to make the First District, and all of West Virginia, an even better place to live, work, and raise a family. We have great challenges ahead of us, but I know we have a Senate leadership team in place that is working every single day to make West Virginia an even greater state. I’m excited to begin this new role, and I am looking forward to all we will accomplish in the upcoming legislative session.”
