Senate President Mitch Carmichael Pledges to Support Governor’s Plan to Make Budget Cuts

CHARLESTON – Senate President Mitch Carmichael, R-Jackson, today reaffirmed his commitment to support Governor Jim Justice in addressing the projected $500 million shortfall in the state’s budget for Fiscal Year 2018.

“It is clear that Governor Justice is going to have to make the kinds of cuts to our state budget that no Governor has ever had to make before, and those cuts will be painful. However, we have no choice. The size of our government is simply unsustainable, and across-the-board cuts will not be able to provide enough of the funding to cover this massive projected deficit. The Senate stands ready to cooperate with Governor Justice as he makes these incredibly tough decisions, and we pledge to give full consideration to his proposals that he plans to share during his State of the State address. This is a crisis that will take the work of all people and parties, and we must be willing to do what is necessary for the future of West Virginia.”
