Senate President-elect Mitch Carmichael Endorses Governor-elect Jim Justice’s Plan for Budget Without Tax Increases

CHARLESTON – Senate President-elect Mitch Carmichael, R-Jackson, is embracing the campaign pledge of Governor-elect Jim Justice to present a balanced budget plan to the West Virginia Legislature for Fiscal Year 2018 that does not “raise taxes.”

“With his vast private sector experience, there’s no question that Governor-elect Justice has demonstrated the skills and talent to direct and utilize the vital functions contained within the Executive Branch to deliver on his bold campaign pledge to confront the fiscal issues of West Virginia without raising taxes,” Senate President-elect Carmichael said.

During his campaign and even after his election, Governor-elect Justice said the solution to West Virginia’s financial issues would not be solved with tax increases. Specifically, Justice told the Beckley Register-Herald, “I don’t think there is any way in the world that you can raise taxes on our people.”

Senator Carmichael said he agrees.

“The people of West Virginia are struggling financially and cannot endure additional tax burdens to prop up government. Just as each family is faced with difficult financial choices when money is scarce, our state government must do the same,” Carmichael said.

With as much as a $400 million projected shortfall in Fiscal Year 2018’s budget, Senate President-elect Carmichael said West Virginia is staring at perhaps the largest financial crisis it has ever faced.

“I am confident that Governor-elect Justice will honor his campaign pledge, submit a budget plan that reflects the fiscal reality of our state, and do so in accordance with the West Virginia Constitution,” Carmichael said. “I am enthusiastic to work with the newly elected Governor to help realize the goal of a balanced West Virginia budget with no tax increases. I look forward to working with his plan to make it a reality for the citizens of West Virginia.”

The 60-day legislative session begins February 8, 2017.
