Bob Williams

Newly Elected Senator Wiliams Sworn In and Ready to Serve 14th District

(January 29, 2009 – Charleston, W.Va.) – On January 14, 2009, Senator Robert L. “Bob” Williams was sworn into the West Virginia State Senate for the 79th Legislature. This was a momentous day for Senator Williams (D-Taylor) who served as executive secretary of the West Virginia Farm Bureau until 2006 when he started his own real estate appraisal business. He is also a farmer. Prior to the commencement of opening day, Williams was joined on the Senate floor by his wife Jennifer and Senate President Earl Ray Tomblin for a special swearing in ceremony.

From his tireless efforts in advocating for favorable agricultural legislation at the local, state, and national levels, one can see that Williams was born to serve. It's only appropriate that he took the oath of office with his hand on a bible held by his wife, which he inherited from his mother, who in turn received it from her grandmother Ida Bird Randolph Davis, aunt of former U.S. Senator Jennings Randolph. It's clear to see that this is a family of leadership and service to others.

Williams, a Taylor Country resident, has been interested in and associated with agriculture since his childhood days spent on his grandparent's farm. After completing degrees in biology, political science and plant pathology, he decided to share his knowledge with future farmers and students preparing for careers in sciences by becoming an instructor at the Potomac State College of West Virginia University.

Following his time as an instructor, he began a 23-year career with the West Virginia Department of Agriculture (WVDA). During his tenure, he was a plant pathologist working with the United States Department of Agriculture to establish a National Plant Pest Survey and Detection Program, the first of its kind in West Virginia. In 1987 he became the director of the WVDA's Marketing and Development Division. On February 11th, Williams will bring his knowledge and years of experience to the Legislature.

"I am so humbled and thankful to be representing the 14th Senatorial District as part of the 79th Legislature," Williams said. "I'm looking forward to bringing my experience to the Legislature, as well as learning from the many veteran Senators and Delegates. It was an honor to be elected and it meant that much more that I could take my oath of office with my wife by my side."

This session, Williams will be serving the 14th District and state’s interests on the Military, Judiciary, Government Organization, Economic Development and Energy, Industry, and Mining Committees. He is the also the Vice Chair of both the Labor and Agriculture Committees.

Williams can be reached during the legislative session by calling his Capitol office at 304 357-7995 or by writing to him at Bob Williams, West Virginia Senate, Room 209W, Capitol Building, Charleston, WV 26305, or by email at bob.williams@wvsenate.gov.
