Delegate Bob Ashley Appointed to 3rd District Senate Seat

CHARLESTON – Gov. Earl Ray Tomblin announced today that Delegate Bob Ashley, R-Roane, has been appointed to fill the vacant Senate seat in the Third District. The seat became vacant after Senator David Nohe, R-Wood, resigned on Aug. 30 to accept an appointment by Gov. Earl Ray Tomblin to the West Virginia Parole Board.

“I am thrilled to welcome Bob Ashley to the Senate,” Senate President Bill Cole said. “Bob has been a tremendous asset to the House of Delegates throughout his nearly 30 years as a member, and I am excited to see what his expertise can bring to our body as we get ready for this important upcoming session.”

Ashley is currently in his 15th term in the House of Delegates. He serves the 11th Delegate District, which covers all of Roane County and the southern portion of Jackson County. He is Vice Chairman of the House Finance Committee and a member of the House Rules Committee. He served as Minority Leader from 1994-1998. Since 1983, he has owned and operated Ashley Insurance Agency in Spencer.

“I’m incredibly thankful to the Third District Senatorial Committee for providing the Governor with three outstanding candidates, and I appreciate the Governor making his decision quickly,” Senate President Cole said. “We’ll miss Senator Nohe greatly, but I feel confident that we have a great Senator to carry on in his place to represent the residents of the Third District.”

Ashley and his wife, Anita, live in Spencer. He is the father of two adult sons, Ben Ashley, an architect living in Charleston and Sam Ashley, a petroleum engineer living in Bakersfield, Calif.
