House Votes to Repeal Common Core Standards

Charleston – This evening the House of Delegates passed H.B. 2934, a bill to repeal Common Core Standards in West Virginia by a vote of 74-19.

Del. Amanda Pasdon (R-Monongalia), Chair of House Committee on Education stated, “The overwhelming majority of West Virginians do not support Common Core Standards and our students deserve better. This is first step in creating education standards that reflect our West Virginia values and I am glad my colleagues joined in bipartisan support to stand up for our children.”

The legislation further grants that the adoption of education standards is the exclusive right of state and local education authorities and void processes and agreements that involve federal monitoring and approval. It also ensures that the state has adequately and appropriately aligned College and Career Ready Standards supported with curriculum, instructional strategies, professional development and parent resources.

Del. Terry Waxman (R-Harrison), one of the bill’s sponsors commented, “I am proud of my fellow Members in the House of Delegates for doing the right thing for our students. After hearing complaints from parents and teachers, repealing these standards is the right thing to do.”

Del. Jim Butler (R-Mason) added, “This will eliminate excessive punitive testing and will allow more time for teaching and it would ensure that standards are developmentally appropriate and that they truly prepare students for college, tech schools or work.

Although West Virginia was the second state to adopt the Common Core Standards in 2010, the state did not receive the federal “Race to the Top” grants that were offered to states for adopting these standards.

“Many states are taking a second look at Common Core Standards, discovering serious concerns and deciding to pause, reset, reevaluate--or repeal and replace,” stated Del. Walter Duke (R-Berkeley).

The bill is sponsored by Del. Amanda Pasdon (R-Monongalia), Del. Jim Butler (R-Mason), Del. Michel Moffatt (R-Putnam), Del. Terry Waxman (R-Harrison), Del. Erikka Storch (R-Ohio) , Del. Paul Espinosa (R-Jefferson), Del. Kayla Kessinger (R-Fayette), Del. Patrick Lane (R-Kanawha), Del. Kelli Sobonya (R-Cabell), Del. Gary Howell (R-Mineral) and Del. Walter Duke (R-Berkeley).

Del. Erikka Storch (R-Ohio) concluded, “I am glad to see this body address the concerns expressed by several parents and educators all over our state.”

The bill goes to the Senate for further consideration.
