Delegate Opposes Public Charter Schools

Charleston, West Virginia – Delegate Justin Marcum (D - Mingo) is standing up against House Bill 2014, that would create the Public Charter Schools Act. Marcum believes that allowing outside organizations to come in and run school systems is not the way to solve the current education problem.

“You can’t run a school system like a business,” Marcum said. “It’s radical and not the answer for this state.”

Marcum stated that the focus needs to be on student achievement and hiring teachers rather than creating competition within the school systems.

“We need to improve the students’ experience and raise the wages for the teacher doing their jobs instead of creating outside funded schools,” Marcum said.

House Bill 2014 is currently pending in the House Education Committee and awaiting discussion.
