House Passes Economic Impact Statement

Acting decisively on the first day of the 82nd Legislature, the House of Delegates adopted an economic impact statement rule. This rule creates a process to allow economists to provide key economic information to delegates before they vote on specific legislation.

“I am pleased that in one of our very first acts in the Legislative Session, we adopted a measure that will provide all legislators information that will help us make more informed decisions, and avoid unwanted and unintended economic consequences,” stated Speaker Tim Armstead.

Delegates will be empowered with the knowledge of whether legislation will create or eliminate West Virginia jobs, and how such legislation may affect compensation. Since 1994, similar attempts to pass measures on economic impact have failed to be adopted by the House of Delegates.
