House Deliberations on Water Protections to Proceed

CHARLESTON – House Judiciary Chairman Tim Manchin said today that a request for a special session on water protection is premature and a distraction to the efforts of the House to address this important matter.

“Between the House Health and Judiciary Committees, members have probably spent more than 20 hours in hearings, debating and listening to numerous experts about Senate Bill 373,” Manchin said. "We have over a week before the end of this session, and the House Judiciary Committee is beginning today to discuss the proposed committee amendment to the legislation.”

The committee is meeting today, tomorrow and in all likelihood Sunday in order to properly deliberate and fine tune the bill.

“I anticipate we will spend many more hours on this in the coming days,” he said. “We have been very thorough and plan to give this important piece of legislation careful consideration.

“I see no reason why a complete and thorough discussion cannot be completed by the end of the regular session next week."

Speaker Tim Miley echoed these sentiments.

"The discussion of the need of a special session is unnecessary as the bill is moving though our committee process in a timely manner," Miley said. “I regret that these members want to give up on passing a bill during the regular session when we still have plenty of time to perfect it."
