Delegate Guthrie Urges Strong Action on Water Bill

CHARLESTON - Kanawha County Delegate Nancy Guthrie took the floor of the House of Delegates today to urge her colleagues to strongly consider significant water protection measures.

“Let’s look at all the recommendations – that’s what the people told us at the public hearing last night,” Guthrie said. “They don’t know if they want to live here, and I don’t blame them. Because if you have to be able to trust in something as fundamental as your water supply.”

Guthrie said she is thankful that the House hosted the two-hour public hearing Monday evening to allow residents to make recommendations about the pending water protection legislation, Senate Bill 373, and voice their frustration.

“I am pleased that the bill is triple referenced so that each and every one of us can take a hard look at it,” she said.

Guthrie urged delegates to consider the recommendations of the federal Chemical Safety Board, Downstream Strategies, and other experts on this issue, and not rely too heavily on industry-related concerns.

“Do we want people within our energy industries to be the only people left living in our state, or do we really want to get serious about diversifying our economy, something we’ve been talking about for the past 30 years,” Guthrie said.

“We have nine counties, 300,000 people, exposed to something we have no idea what the long term effects of will be. For the sake of the kids, for the sake of your communities, take a real hard look at the recommendations that have been made by the experts,” she continued. “I want to be able to trust my water. I want to be able to trust my water company. That’s not a whole lot to ask.”
