Delegate Poore Calls for Renewed Water Distribution, Town Hall Meeting

CHARLESTON – As troubling news of the possible existence of formaldehyde in the area’s tainted water supply emerges, Kanawha Delegate Meshea Poore is calling for the re-establishment of water distribution stations and has scheduled a town hall meeting.

“Residents within these nine counties, myself included, already lacked confidence in the safety of their water supply,” Poore said. “Now, as I am astonished to learn, the situation could be even worse than previously imagined.

“No one should be expected to consume, or even wash with, this water.”

Delegate Poore was already planning a town hall meeting for 6-8 pm Monday, Feb. 3, at First Baptist Church located at 432 Shrewsbury Street, Charleston.

“I have countless questions that have not been answered, and I know fellow residents do too,” she said. “I am inviting anyone with information about the safety of our water to attend and share information with us.”

Today, an Environmental Quality Board said the crude MCHM that spilled into the water supply ultimately can break down into formaldehyde, perhaps in the shower, and could be inhaled.

“I am beyond frustrated that we did not know this from the beginning,” Delegate Poore said. “However, from this point on, it is my hope we will get all the information available and confidence will eventually be restored in full.

“In the meantime, we are still under a state of emergency because of this, and I think it’s only appropriate that funds be provided – whether by the state or the federal government – so that clean water can to continue to be distributed to residents.”
