Senate Adopts Resolution Honoring Slain State Troopers

The West Virginia Senate adopted Senate Concurrent Resolution 9 today, requesting the Division of Highways to name a portion of U. S. Route 522, between West Virginia State Route 13 and West Virginia State Route 9, the “Trooper First Class Thomas Dean Hercules and Trooper Charles Henry Johnson Memorial Highway”.

Sponsored by Senator Donald Cookman, this resolution seeks to honor Trooper First Class Thomas Dean Hercules and Trooper Charles Henry Johnson, who both served honorably in the West Virginia State Police in Morgan County, West Virginia and gave their lives in service of their fellow West Virginians on January 12th, 1977.

Both Trooper First Class Hercules and Trooper Johnson served in the United States Armed Forces in the Marines and Air Force, respectively. They each joined the State Police and served with distinction and honor until they gave the ultimate sacrifice and were gunned down in the line of duty.

“It is my honor and privilege to sponsor this resolution honoring two brave and courageous West Virginians who dedicated their lives in service of others,” said Senator Cookman. “This long overdue token of our appreciation should serve as a memorial of the lives led and lost by these two heroic troopers. May we never forget them or the valor with which they died.”

Senator Cookman previously served as the Hampshire County Prosecuting Attorney from 1973 thru 1992, and as a Special Prosecuting Attorney in Hardy, Pendleton and Mineral Counties.

The resolution now heads to the House of Delegates for further consideration.
