Delegate Poore

Delegate Poore chosen to serve with Council for the United States and Italy

Delegate Meshea Poore traveled to Austin, Texas, this month as the first West Virginian chosen to attend the Young Leaders Conference of the Council for the United States and Italy.

“The experience was amazing,” Poore said. “To be in a room with people from across the world, talking about roots and borders and how we could be defined and or limited by them, was very interesting.”

The Council for the United States and Italy is a binational, non-profit, non-political organization founded in 1983 to foster closer ties between the United States and Italy, and – in a broader perspective – between the United States and Europe. The focus of its membership and activities is economy and finance.

The annual Young Leaders Conferences are for Americans and Italians under the age of 40 who have distinguished themselves in various careers. The conferences take place alternately in the United States and Italy. For the past five years, participants from other countries have also been included.

The purpose of the Young Leaders Conferences is to allow participants to gain new perspectives on issues of global relevance by exchanging and comparing knowledge and experience, as well as to create a network among emerging European and American leaders.

“We talked about the personal, political and economic dimensions of our countries,” Delegate Poore said. “We discussed how we are agents of change and it is our responsibility to begin to invest in the thought of expanding outside of our comfort zone to seek opportunity for our countries and communities – always understanding the richness of our roots, but also the value of others thoughts, ideas and resources.”

The conference, which was paid for by the Council, took place over the course of two days, Oct. 17-19.

“It was an honor to represent West Virginia – to even be asked to chair one of the forums on personal dimensions – and to be the first person from West Virginia to be chosen to join this selective group,” Poore said.
