Delegate Hunt

Kanawha Delegate Leading Study on Protecting Insured Homeowners

CHARLESTON -- As the Legislature convenes the September interim committee meetings, Delegate Mark Hunt is co-chairing a committee studying insurance-related issues, including how to better protect insured West Virginians following a natural disaster.

“Unfortunately, we learned following the derecho that hit this region in 2012, some residents lost insurance coverage after filing home insurance claims or were denied claims,” Hunt said. “While we realize most insurers are fair and operate in good faith, this committee is examining proposed legislation that could prevent any isolated unfair practices.”

The Legislature’s Joint Judiciary Subcommittee A, which meets 4 pm Tuesday in the Senate Judiciary Room, will hear from the state Insurance Commission and other representatives about legislation relating to property insurance coverage denied or canceled due to natural causes that was considered during the 2013 regular legislative session.

Although Delegate Hunt also was recently appointed Vice Chairman of the House Judiciary Committee, which involves helping manage one of the busiest committees of the House, he said he is enjoying leading the interim study group.

“When these kinds of natural disasters strike, we want to make sure that West Virginia homeowners are properly covered,” said Delegate Hunt, who also serves on the House Banking & Insurance Committee, said. “The Legislature continues to monitor our entire insurance industry. We want coverage to be accessible and fairly administered, as well as ensure that insurance businesses find West Virginia to be a business-friendly environment.”

Speaker Tim Miley said he has great confidence in Delegate Hunt.

“Not only is Delegate Hunt a hard-working representative, but he is also an experienced and talented attorney,” Speaker Miley said. “I appreciate his willingness to lead this study and to be part of the House leadership team.”
