President Kessler

Kessler Urging Public to Attend Highway Commission Meetings

CHARLESTON, W.V. – Senate President Jeff Kessler (D-Marshall) is urging West Virginians to get involved and share their thoughts on how to improve the state’s infrastructure.

The Governor’s Blue Ribbon Highway Commission is holding a series of public hearings around the state to get public input on to adequately fund infrastructure projects. Currently, West Virginia needs an additional $1.2 billion to complete various projects and to maintain its 36, 000 miles of highways and bridges.

“It is crucial that we move forward with finding a solid, secure measure to fund West Virginia’s extensive network of roads, highways and bridges,” says Kessler. “I am eagerly awaiting suggestions from local residents for innovative ways to raise the revenue needed for maintenance and repairs.”

Senators Robert Beach (D-Monongalia) and Robert Plymale (D-Wayne) are serving as non-voting members of the Commission. They say it is important to spread the word about the meetings because the Commission needs a lot of input from residents.

“I encourage everyone to get your thoughts in order and make plans to stop by one of the remaining meetings so your voice can be heard,” says Beach.

The Blue Ribbon Highway Commission held its first public meeting Thursday in Kearneysville. “In order to develop potential transportation funding measures we need to hear from residents,” says Plymale. “Our citizens deserve a highway system that improves the safety of drivers and passengers.”

The remaining eight meetings will take place in Logan, Huntington, Wheeling, Parkersburg, Fairmont, Princeton, Beckley and Elkins.
