Speaker Miley

Harrison County Delegate Tim Miley Chosen to Lead House

CHARLESTON - Harrison County Delegate Tim Miley was sworn in as Speaker of the West Virginia House of Delegates today, vowing to work with all delegates to direct renewed energy and focus on education, internet access and infrastructure and to encourage business innovation and entrepreneurship.

“I am honored to be serving as speaker and I truly believe that when we work together we can accomplish great things,” Miley said. “What I think we all share is that our constituents elected us to work to create opportunities for economic success – not only for the adults who voted for us, but also for their children.”

In addressing full House during the special proceedings today, Speaker Miley emphasized the importance of education and training.

“We must start with ensuring that every child in this state is in a position to receive an education or some type of training that provides value,” he said. “We live in a world where academic success and/or success in training endeavors is critical to ultimate success in life.”

And available training must include vocational education, community and technical and junior colleges, he added.

Speaker Miley also pointed to the urgent need to increase West Virginians’ access to information, as well as improve infrastructure.

“Quite frankly, access to worldwide information by having access to the Internet is a game changer for West Virginia and, in my opinion, has become as vitally as important as water, sewage and good roads,” he said. “Further, we cannot be content with access to the Internet, but we must strive for continued growth toward everyone having access to high speed Internet capabilities.”

Speaker Miley also called for a shift away from political antagonism and negativity to focus instead on creating new opportunities by encouraging innovation in both education and in business and industry.

“Let's stop with the excuses of why nobody should come to our state and let's start celebrating the successes that our state has to offer,” he said. Following the special proceedings, the House adjourned, and members are headed to Wheeling for legislative interim committee meetings, which begin Wednesday.

“I am extremely honored to have been chosen to lead the House, and I am very excited to get to work,” Speaker Miley said.
