Wheeling to Host West Virginia Sesquicentennial Celebration

Charleston, W.Va. – Senator Rocky Fitzsimmons (D-Ohio) announced today that Wheeling will be hosting a full-day event in June to celebrate our state’s past, appreciate our present, and look ahead to our bright future. June 20th will mark the 150th anniversary of West Virginia’s secession from Virginia and the birth of our great state.

Civil War re-enactors, historic speeches, the Wildcat Regiment Band, and a West Virginia Birthday Cake will be some of the highlights of the celebration. Additionally, Senator Fitzsimmons says the West Virginia Legislature will be holding June Interim Meetings in Wheeling on June 19, 20, and 21.

“I am excited to see the Legislature return to the site of the first West Virginia Capitol,” says Fitzsimmons. “Holding interim meetings outside of Charleston gives lawmakers the opportunity to discuss issues relevant to the area while getting personal interaction with residents. During their time in Wheeling, legislators will also get the chance to participate in the West Virginia Day festivities.”

Wheeling is the home of the original West Virginia Capitol. It served as the State Capitol from 1863 until 1870, when Charleston was selected as the permanent West Virginia capital.
