First Informer Broadcasters Act Passes Senate

Charleston, WV - West Virginia Senate Majority Leader John Unger, (D-Berkeley), announced passage by the Senate of Senate Bill 353 Establishing First Informer Broadcasters Act.

"Senate Bill 353 would allow certification of certain media sources as First Informer Broadcasters, so that they would have access to adequate fuel supplies and electricity generation during a disaster,” said Senator John Unger, the sole sponsor of the bill, “The media plays a vital role in providing information to the public during emergency situations, and this bill would assist in providing for the uninterrupted transmission of that much needed information."

The legislation, now in the House of Delegates, calls for coordinated plans dealing with the preparation for and response to an emergency or disaster to be developed between the Division of Homeland Security and Emergency Management and the West Virginia Broadcasters Association. The legislation also requires programs for training and certifying First Informer Broadcasters.
