Delegate Poore Helps Promote New Dropout Prevention Program

CHARLESTON - Kanawha County Delegate Meshea Poore will be speaking Friday at Mary C. Snow Elementary School in support of a new drop-out prevention initiative by the West Virginia Education Alliance that focuses on the state’s youngest students.

"The dropout crisis and a future West Virginia workforce with inadequate job skills threaten the economic, social, and democratic fabric of our community, state, and nation," Poore said. "The costs of West Virginia students dropping out of high school are devastating and long lasting."

On Friday, January 18, at 2 pm, the Education Alliance’s SWAG (Students With Awesome Goals) initiative will kick-off at Mary C. Snow West Side Elementary School in Charleston. Early intervention is the best way to fight the high school completion challenge. Thanks to the support of The Bernard H. and Blanche E. Jacobson Foundation, The Education Alliance is developing a dropout prevention initiative for West Virginia preK-5 students.

The SWAG concept was developed by VISTA Volunteer Brian Williams to address the ABC's of School Success (attendance, behavior and course performance).

The kick-off assembly will provide students with incentives for displaying good attendance, behavior and course performance. Each nine weeks students will have an opportunity to earn SWAG gear for meeting the ABC's of School Success.

"Like many of The Education Alliance's other initiatives, the SWAG pilot project is designed teach students the importance of accepting responsibility for their attendance, behavior and course performance. With this program we hope to show students the positive effects of their behavior," said Dr. Patricia S. Kusimo, president/CEO of The Education Alliance. "The SWAG program is allowing our organization to transition our work to effect elementary school students."

The SWAG pilot project is an early intervention tool that The Education Alliance plans to replicate statewide.

About The Education Alliance: Founded in July 1983 as the first statewide public education fund in the nation, The Education Alliance is a private-sector initiative to help businesses understand the importance of financially and resourcefully supporting the state's public schools and to give business a voice in public education that advances policies and practices to continually improve public school student achievement in West Virginia.
