WV AFL-CIO Donates to McDowell New Housing Project

Charleston, WV - In an effort to support McDowell County, the West Virginia AFL-CIO has donated $6,500 to the Council of the Southern Mountains, a community action agency helping low-income families achieve self-sufficiency in the southern part of the state. The donation will aid in building new housing in the county. The new housing development is part of the “Reconnecting McDowell”project.

“We saw this as an exciting opportunity in assisting McDowell County to provide quality housing that is desperately needed for its residents. We were very fortunate to have partners such as AFTWV, Delegate Moore and The Council of the Southern Mountains in providing money for completing the water line for the new homes,” said Kenny Perdue, President of the AFL-CIO.

The $6,500 donated by the WV AFL-CIO will be used to help extend energy efficient water lines to a new housing development that will create new home ownership opportunities in McDowell.

“The provision of safe, accessible and modern home ownership opportunities is certainly a progressive step in the resurrection, revitalization and stabilization of McDowell County, both now and in the long-term. All the partners, especially Kenny Perdue and all my friend at the West Virginia AFL-CIO, are to be commended for their commitment and dedication to the many fine citizens of McDowell County,” Delegate Clif Moore (D-McDowell) said.

This project is a collaborative effort with the Council of the Southern Mountains, the Shott Foundation, Reconnecting McDowell and the West Virginia AFL-CIO. Most of the funding for the project will come from the West Virginia Housing Development Fund. Due to lack of infrastructure at the development site, additional funding was raised in order to run septic and water lines to the homes. Through the collaboration, this was accomplished.

“This will be the first new housing built on this side of McDowell County in seven years. The housing will have 1,200 square feet with three bedrooms and two baths,” said Penni Padgett, the Housing Coordinator for the Council of the Southern Mountains. The homes will be available to those in the low to moderate income bracket.

Created just last year, Reconnecting McDowell is a long term public-private partnership that will focus on dealing with the problems faced by the county’s students in and out of school. This includes finding creative ways to invest in housing, technology, broadband, transportation and other areas that will help in establishing a brighter future for, not only the children, but all residents of McDowell. So far, 40 businesses and organizations have joined the project. For more information on the Reconnecting McDowell Project, go to http://www.reconnectingmcdowell.org/.
