Senator Evan Jenkins

Digital Learning Day at the Legislature

The Senate passed a resolution recognizing Feb. 1, 2012 as Digital Learning Day in the West Virginia Legislature. In recognition of the Legislature’s celebration, the third grade classes of Meadows Elementary School arranged to “Skype” with Senator Evan Jenkins (D-Cabell) during class, Wednesday afternoon.

“Our children do not know a time without computers and cell phones,” said Jenkins . “It is amazing the things that they can do with technology, when the resources are made available.”

Technology has become an undeniable presence that spans generations. This is only the second year that the Legislature has recognized Digital Learning Day, but it seems as though the annual celebration will persist for years to come.

“This was certainly a memorable day for the children,” said Elizabeth Green, Meadows Elementary School Principal.

Green said that the students asked intelligent questions and were very engaged in the opportunity.

Senator Jenkins was seated in the Senate Chamber inside the Capitol Building in Charleston, while the 37 students were in Huntington at the desks of their Meadows Elementary classroom, yet they spoke face to face.

“Technology allows us to communicate so effectively,” said Jenkins “It was a great opportunity to get to speak to the students, delightful and refreshing.”

The opportunity was the perfect curriculum supplement for the third graders, who are currently studying American government. The students shared with Jenkins their knowledge about the branches of government and the roles that each body plays. Jenkins was able to answer questions posed by the students regarding the broad scope of national government as well as the legislative process in West Virginia.

“I was happy to answer their questions and I believe that it was an excellent learning experience for all of us,” said Jenkins.

In response to a student’s question regarding his decision to become a Senator, Jenkins discussed his first leadership position as Fire Patrol in the fifth grade. He encouraged students that it is never too early to start thinking about running for office. Perhaps a future lawmaker is among the third grade class of Meadows Elementary.

Jenkins is co-sponsoring Senate Bill 103, which would propose a program to incorporate digital media into the learning curriculum across the state. The bill would create a strategic plan and the program would be implemented as funds become available.

“Digital learning has become a an effective tool in schools across the nation and continues to help produce well-informed, skilled students,” said Jenkins. “We want to ensure that our West Virginia students have every opportunity to be every bit as successful as we know that they have the capacity to be.”
