LOCEA Requests Additional Funding for New River Community and Technical College

CHARLESTON, WEST VIRGINIA - The legislative committee charged with oversight on all educational issues yesterday passed a resolution to request additional funding for three community and technical colleges, New River Community and Technical College among them. The additional funding would help the college pay rent at the many locations in which they have operations. Annual rent payments recently increased from $30,000 to $130,000 at the Erma Byrd Center alone. Funding was included in the recently passed budget; however the line items for the three higher education institutions were vetoed by Governor Manchin. New River Community and Technical College would have to vacate from the Erma Byrd Center if funding is not increased.

“Education is one of the core economic drivers for the state and region. If we do not find the necessary funding for this institution we will be doing a disservice to our children and community,” said Senator Mike Green (D-Raleigh). “This community needs to have a higher education system that is fully funded with a permanent location to make a difference in the lives of all those that seek to further their education and make a better life for themselves and their families.”

“New River CTC is a beacon in the region and in the higher education community. The services they provide will allow our citizens to compete on a global level,” stated Delegate Linda Sumner (R-Raleigh). “I applaud everyone on this committee for helping the three institutions, particularly New River CTC, in their effort to regain necessary funding. Without the additional funding we would short change our educational goals as a state, decimate the college going rate and possibly stall the region’s economy.”

The Higher Education Policy Commission is in complete agreement that additional funding is needed and are working with Senator Green, Delegate Sumner and the Education Committees to regain funding and to work with all involved parties for a sensible solution to rental agreements and responsible spending.

“It is through working together, across the political aisle and between business and public interests that we can solve not only this funding problem, but many other issues as well,” added Senator Green.
